Frangokastello

Φραγκοκάστελλο
The Venetian castle on the sand, the south coast flatlands, and the ghost story

Frangokastello is a Venetian castle built in 1371 standing directly on the sand of the south coast, with the White Mountains rising behind it and the Libyan Sea in front. The castle is almost perfectly preserved. The beach in front is sandy and shallow. Every May, a local legend says, the ghosts of the Cretan fighters who died here in 1828 walk at dawn through the morning mist: the Drosoulites, the Dew Shadows.
