Kalyves is an Apokoronas village on the coast: sandy beach, a waterfront lined with tavernas, and a working character that distinguishes it from purely tourist resorts. The village has a small harbour, a good local market, and the feel of somewhere that existed long before tourists arrived and will continue after they leave. It is 30 kilometres east of Chania and makes an excellent base for exploring both the coast and the Apokoronas hills.
