Sfakia

Σφακιά
The wildest and most independent region of western Crete

Sfakia is the mountainous coastal region of the south: remote and historically fierce, with raki and lamb that locals call the best in Crete. The Sfakians have never been comfortably governed by anyone: not the Venetians, not the Ottomans, not the Germans. The landscape matches the reputation. Limestone walls drop straight into deep gorges, and much of the coast can only be reached by boat.
