Glyka Nera ("sweet waters") is a remote pebble cove on the south coast of Crete where freshwater springs emerge through the seabed close to shore, creating an unusual mixing of fresh and salt water that gives the beach its name. The springs keep the shallows cooler than the open sea and give the water a slight shimmer. The cove is accessible only by boat from Loutro or Hora Sfakion, or by a 90-minute cliff-top walk from Loutro.
Why Visit Glyka Nera
- ✓The freshwater springs are a geological curiosity visible as shimmering distortion in the shallows; the mixing of fresh and salt water creates a refractive lens effect.
- ✓Complete absence of roads means no cars, no crowds, and an atmosphere of total remoteness.
- ✓The cliff path from Loutro is one of the finest short coastal walks on the south coast.
- ✓The surrounding limestone cliffs shelter the cove from all winds except strong southerlies.

How to Get There
By boat: water taxis from Loutro or Hora Sfakion drop at the beach (15-30 minutes). By foot: a marked path from Loutro follows the cliff top for 90 minutes: the path is well-marked but exposed and requires good footwear. No road access.
Best Time to Visit
June through September. The water taxi from Loutro runs regularly in summer. Outside summer, water taxis are less reliable, so check before committing to the walk.
Take the water taxi from Loutro one way and walk back on the cliff path, since the views walking back are better. The springs are most visible in the morning light.
