Akrotiri is the limestone peninsula that juts north of Chania into the Cretan Sea. It contains a military base, three important monasteries, the airport, excellent beaches and some of the best snorkelling coastline on the island. It is simultaneously the most institutional and most wild part of the greater Chania area.
