Kandanos in the Selino region was burned by German forces in 1941 in reprisal for Cretan resistance — the inscription left behind reads "Here stood Kandanos, destroyed in retribution for the murder of 25 German soldiers." The village was rebuilt and the sign preserved. The region around it has excellent Byzantine churches, including some of the finest fresco cycles in Crete.
