Omalos is a high plateau in the White Mountains at 1,080 metres altitude — a flat, treeless landscape surrounded by peaks that reach 2,400 metres. The Samaria Gorge begins here, at the top of the Xyloskalo staircase. In summer, Omalos is the overnight stop before an early gorge descent. In winter, it is covered in snow and feels like a different country from the coast.
