Afrata Beach
A small pebble cove on the Rodopou Peninsula, backed by limestone cliffs and far enough off the main circuit to stay quiet through most of the summer.
Afrata is a small pebble beach on the Rodopou Peninsula, sitting inside a sheltered bay flanked by limestone cliffs. The water is clear and the seabed rocky, good for snorkeling. It draws mostly locals and people who sought it out, and stays fairly empty even in August.
Getting there takes some effort. A narrow road winds down from Afrata village through bare scrubland, with a view across the Gulf of Chania opening up near the bottom. Tamarisk trees line the back of the beach, and a small taverna handles food and drinks.
Afrata is pebble rather than sand, and that is much of why it stays calm. The water is clear, the seabed rocky and worth exploring with a mask. The tamarisks give enough shade to make a long afternoon comfortable without needing an umbrella.
