Ilingas is a small beach on the south coast between Sfakia and Frangokastello, accessible by a path that at one point requires the use of a fixed rope to descend a short cliff section. The rope makes it memorable and keeps the crowds away. The beach itself — pebble, clear water, dramatic cliffs — is worth every metre of the approach.
Why Visit Ilingas Beach
- ✓The rope descent is a genuine physical challenge that creates a sense of achievement and genuine seclusion.
- ✓The water is exceptionally clear — the south coast visibility is consistently better than the north.
- ✓The surrounding cliffs make the cove feel like a private discovery.
- ✓The area between Sfakia and Frangokastello is one of the wildest stretches of Cretan coastline.

How to Get There
From Hora Sfakion, drive east on the coast road towards Frangokastello. After approximately 8km, look for a rough car park on the right side of the road. The path descends to the beach in 20 minutes, including the rope section.
Best Time to Visit
May through October. The south coast is significantly calmer than the north in summer — the meltemi north wind does not reach here. September is ideal.
Do not attempt the rope section in wet conditions. The rope is maintained but not official. Test it before committing your weight.
