Ravdoucha

The long wild beach below the fortress ruins

Ravdoucha is a long, unorganised beach on the north-west coast of the Chania region, below the ruins of a Venetian coastal fortress of the same name. The beach stretches for nearly a kilometre of sand and pebble, backed by low cliffs with the fortress walls visible above. It is almost completely unknown to tourists.

How to Get There

From Kissamos, take the coastal road west past Nopigia. The turning for Ravdoucha is signposted but easy to miss. A rough track leads down to a small parking area above the beach.

Best Time to Visit

May through October. Morning is calmer — the afternoon coastal breeze picks up. The fortress is worth exploring at any time of year.

Climb the fortress walls in the morning before the heat builds. The view from the top shows the full extent of the coastline east to Gramvousa.
