Kalami is a small cove on the south-facing coast of the Akrotiri peninsula, below the road that connects Chania to Souda. The cove is sheltered, pebble and small boulders, with clear water and a completely unorganised character. It is used almost entirely by locals from the nearby villages — the kind of beach where people bring their own food and stay all day.
Why Visit Kalami Cove
- ✓One of the closest wild swimming spots to Chania city — 20 minutes by car.
- ✓The south-facing aspect means it catches morning sun and is sheltered from the prevailing north wind.
- ✓The Akrotiri olive groves above the beach provide a characteristic Cretan landscape backdrop.
- ✓The complete lack of tourist infrastructure means it feels genuinely local.

How to Get There
From Chania, take the road to Souda/Akrotiri. Look for the small signed turning towards the coast between Chordaki and Souda. A rough track leads down to the cove in 5 minutes.
Best Time to Visit
April through October. The sheltered position makes it pleasant even in the shoulder season.
Go on a weekday to experience it as locals do. The water is warmest in September when the sea has had all summer to heat.
