Orthi Ammos is a long beach south of Falasarna, separated from the more visited northern beach by a rocky headland. The beach is backed by sand dunes and low tamarisk scrub, faces the open Cretan Sea to the west, and is never organised with sun-loungers. In the late afternoon, the sunset light here is extraordinary.
Why Visit Orthi Ammos
- ✓The sand dunes behind the beach are rare in Crete and give the landscape a completely different character from typical Cretan beaches.
- ✓The beach extends far enough that even in peak season you can walk to emptiness.
- ✓The west-facing aspect and open horizon make for spectacular sunsets.
- ✓The strong afternoon wind that makes conditions rough for swimming also creates good kitesurfing waves.

How to Get There
From Falasarna village, continue south on the track that runs along the coast. The beach begins after the rocky headland — 15 minutes on foot from the Falasarna car park, or a short drive south on the rough coastal track.
Best Time to Visit
Morning for swimming — the afternoon westerly picks up strongly. Sunset visits are excellent even when the wind is too strong for swimming.
Come for the sunset and bring a jacket — the evening wind drops the temperature significantly. Walk south along the dunes before the light goes.
