Menies is a small beach north of Kissamos where a freshwater stream meets the sea, creating a shallow lagoon bordered by reeds and tamarisk trees. The beach is pebbly and unorganised, with no sun-loungers and no facilities, but the combination of fresh and salt water, the shade from the trees, and the almost complete absence of tourists makes it one of the most pleasant wild beaches in the Kissamos area.
Why Visit Menies Beach
- ✓The freshwater lagoon behind the beach is a habitat for frogs, terrapins and various wading birds — unusual in this landscape.
- ✓The tamarisk trees provide natural shade that makes midday swimming comfortable.
- ✓The beach is rarely crowded because it has no facilities and is bypassed by tourist traffic heading to Balos.
- ✓The shallow lagoon entry makes it excellent for children and nervous swimmers.

How to Get There
From Kissamos, take the coast road north towards Kaliviani. The turn for Menies is signposted. A rough track leads to a small car park above the beach. 5-minute walk down.
Best Time to Visit
May through October. Avoid after heavy rain when the stream runs high and the water quality drops temporarily.
The freshwater lagoon is best in the morning when the light filters through the reeds. Bring a mask — the transition zone between fresh and salt water is worth exploring underwater.
