Seitan Limania is a narrow fjord cut into the white limestone cliffs of the Akrotiri peninsula, 15 kilometres east of Chania. The water is an almost fluorescent turquoise — the colour comes from the limestone-filtered spring water mixing with the sea in a shallow, sheltered inlet. The name translates loosely as "Devil's Harbours", and the descent requires care: the path is steep, the rocks are sharp, and the goats will not move for you.
Why Visit Seitan Limania
- ✓The colour of the water is unlike anything else on the north coast of Crete — deep aquamarine shading to electric blue near the cliff walls.
- ✓The fjord walls shelter the cove from all but the strongest northerly winds, making it swimmable on days when the open coast is rough.
- ✓The access road is rough and the descent steep enough to deter casual visitors, keeping it genuinely uncrowded before 10:00.
- ✓The snorkelling in the narrow channel is exceptional — the visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres.

How to Get There
From Chania, take the road to Akrotiri (follow signs for the airport initially, then branch right for Stavros). At the end of the Akrotiri road, a rough track leads to a small car park. The descent to the beach takes 10 minutes on foot — wear real shoes. The path is unmaintained and the final section requires using your hands.
Best Time to Visit
June and September are ideal — the crowds of July and August can make parking impossible and the descent dangerous. Early morning (before 09:00) at any time of year is the right move. Avoid if the meltemi north wind is blowing strongly.
Park at the top and arrive before 09:00 in summer. The descent takes 10 minutes on a good day but 20 minutes to climb back up in the heat. Bring real shoes — the limestone is sharp. The second, smaller fjord (10 minutes east along the cliff top) is almost always empty.
