Milia is a completely restored medieval stone village in the chestnut forests above Kissamos, accessible via a rough mountain road and offering eco-accommodation in fully restored stone houses, a restaurant using only produce from the surrounding land, and a total absence of modernity that feels deliberate rather than accidental. No wi-fi, no phone signal, no road noise. The chestnut trees are old, the nights are quiet, and the food is the best mountain cuisine in Crete.
Why Visit Milia Mountain Village
- ✓The restoration is architectural and agricultural — the village functions as a living traditional settlement, not a museum.
- ✓The restaurant serves food grown, reared and gathered within walking distance of the kitchen.
- ✓The accommodation in restored stone houses is the most authentic mountain stay in western Crete.
- ✓The surrounding chestnut and oak forest provides walking and a landscape entirely different from the coast.

How to Get There
From Kissamos, follow signs for Vlatos and Milia. The road climbs into the mountains for approximately 40 minutes. The last section is unpaved. Booking accommodation at Milia is strongly recommended — the restaurant also requires booking.
Best Time to Visit
October through May for the mountain character, chestnut season and quieter roads. Summer is also beautiful but book well in advance.
Book the restaurant for dinner and stay the night. The morning is the point — the chestnut forest at 07:00 with coffee on your stone terrace is an experience that cannot be replicated on the coast.
