The Theriso gorge is a 14-kilometre road drive — not a gorge walk but a gorge drive — through a dramatic limestone canyon below the village of Theriso, where Eleftherios Venizelos launched the Cretan uprising against Ottoman rule in 1905. The gorge is beautiful at any hour but extraordinary in the early morning when the light comes down through the walls and the plane trees beside the stream have the road to themselves.
Why Visit Theriso Gorge
- ✓The gorge road is one of the most scenic drives in the Chania region — narrow, shaded and dramatic.
- ✓The village of Theriso has a direct historical connection to Cretan independence — the revolution began here.
- ✓The tavernas in Theriso village serve the best slow-cooked lamb and Cretan dishes in the foothills.
- ✓The drive can be combined with a longer loop through the Apokoronas hills.

How to Get There
From Chania, follow signs for Theriso — the village is 14km south of the city. The road through the gorge starts from Mournies (south of Chania) and passes through the canyon to the village. The gorge section takes about 20 minutes.
Best Time to Visit
Any time of year. Spring (April-May) when the plane trees are fresh is particularly beautiful. Summer mornings before 09:00 for the light.
Drive through early and stop in the village for coffee at one of the kafeneions. On Sunday lunchtimes, the tavernas fill with Chania families — this is the best time to experience it.
