The Gouverneto monastery complex on the Akrotiri peninsula includes a dramatically located secondary monastery — Katholiko — carved into a gorge that opens to the sea. The walk from Gouverneto takes 20 minutes down through the gorge, past cave hermitages and a large stalactite cave, to the ruins of the 10th-century monastery that sits above a narrow sea inlet. Almost no one continues past Gouverneto to find it.
Why Visit Katholiko Gorge & Monastery
- ✓The gorge walk from Gouverneto is one of the most unusual short walks in Crete — past cave churches, hermitages, and Byzantine ruins.
- ✓The 10th-century Katholiko monastery is the oldest monastery in Crete and a genuine architectural and historical rarity.
- ✓The sea inlet at the bottom of the gorge, where monks once loaded supplies, creates an eerie and atmospheric end to the walk.
- ✓The stalactite cave (Arkoudia cave) on the path is free to enter and extraordinary.

How to Get There
Drive to Gouverneto Monastery on the Akrotiri peninsula (well-signposted from the coast road). From Gouverneto, a clearly marked path descends through the gorge to Katholiko — 20 minutes each way. Modestly dressed visitors are expected at the monastery.
Best Time to Visit
October through May — the gorge is cool and the walk is comfortable. In summer, start before 09:00. The monastery is closed in the afternoon.
Arrive at Gouverneto when it opens (07:00-14:00 most days, closed Tuesday). The monks expect modesty in dress. The cave church inside the cliff at the bottom is only visible by looking up from the monastery ruins.
